Brief
The project involves you designing a small two-storey private house and office with a footprint of 10.0m x 10.0m set in a “plot” of 480m2. Roughly 12m x 40m
The clients are two single, young professionals.
An architect who lives with his business partner (an graphic designer). The architect, Jack, set up a small architectural practice upon leaving University and asked his friend, (Sam) to assist him in his venture. Both business partners work from home at computers and often meet with clients at their house in order to discuss ideas and proposals. They are busy, hard working designers and have commissioned you to design her low cost, low energy home, which is flexible enough to adapt as the business grows and changes. They are interested in recycling/renewable energy and materials and require an outdoor space for entertaining and meeting clients on more pleasant days.
The design should include as a minimum;
Entrance Hall with cloakroom
Living area
Dining Area
Cooking Area
Staircase
2 Bedrooms one of which should have an en-suite
Bathroom
Workspace – shared and individual spaces
There should also be space for one car, a recycling centre and composting facility
The details of the brief you can develop for yourself.
Preparatory work
Near to where you live select a suitably small empty piece of land, this could involve the demolition of an existing building (small bungalows in a quiet residential road are usually prime suspects) or it may be an vacant plot.
Take lots of photos of the plot in order that you can develop sketches of your building at a later date.
Go to your local library and get the Ordnance Survey at 1; 1250 scale plan of the plot and the surrounding area this will cost you about 50p
Start thinking about how you imagine these people to live and write down a list of everything you think they would need
Select one Architect from the 3 following list
#1 Glenn Murcutt
#2 David Chipperfield
#3 Renzo Piano
Research that Architect on the web/ the local library and from their portfolio of projects select a suitably small building that you will base your design upon. Discuss this when you come in for a tutorial and have an alternative unless your first choice proves unsuitable but bring as much information on that particular architect/project as you can find.
From that research you will produce a set of design sketches, which describes how you think that you will approach the project. You should also research alternative forms of energy to heat the home, to generate electricity, to recycle, you should also investigate recyclable materials for use in building the home.
Requirements
You should aim to produce;
A blog of your development work, client research, site and precedence information
A site plan at 1:1250 showing the location of your building in relation to its surroundings
A 1: 200 plan showing the building and the plot, landscape, approach, parking, boundaries
A 1: 50 Ground Floor Plan showing the internal layout of the building
A 1: 50 First Floor Plan, showing the upper level layout
A set of elevations
A 1: 50 longitudinal section
A 1: 50 transverse section
Additionally as part of your design work you should develop your sketches as your design develops – these should be uploaded onto your blog.
You will present your work in an A3 bound journal (similar to that of Project 4 ARC4001) and within this make reference to all your development work and the build up of your project.
Assessment
● Your Resubmission Project should demonstrate that you are able to:
Produce architectural designs that recognise and respond to:
social, cultural and aesthetic needs at a basic level;
basic technical, practical and environmental considerations;
primary spatial, functional and ergonomic needs at a basic level;
and demonstrate a basic understanding of how conflicts between these issues are resolved in the creation of a coherent architectural design that addresses them all at a basic level.
Conceptualise and relate own ideas and those of others to the expression of a design solution at a basic level.
Clearly and effectively convey designs and ideas through architectural conventions, and graphic and model based communication methods.
Clearly and effectively present and debate architectural designs and ideas.
